Job TITLE: DIRECTOR OF HEALTH & SAFETY
Reports to: ECSS PRESIDENT
INDIRECT REPORTS TO: ECSS PRINCIPALS AND DIRECTOR OF MAINTENANCE
Position status: FULL TIME, NON-EXEMPT
Position Summary:
The Director of Health and Safety will oversee the campus safety officers and is responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing comprehensive safety and security protocols to ensure the well-being of students, staff, and visitors across all campuses and the Erie Catholic Office (ECO). This role works in close collaboration with all leadership teams across the campuses; more specifically, the technology and facilities management teams to assess risks, maintain safe environments, and respond to emergencies effectively.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in education, criminal justice, public administration, or a related field.
- At least five years of successful experience in school safety, law enforcement, emergency management, or a similar role.
- Ideally, should be a practicing Catholic but not required. Regardless, must be willing to attend all school functions, including religious activities.
- Demonstrated ability to remain calm and decisive during emergencies.
- Demonstrated adherence to the highest moral standards.
- Committed to the ECSS mission, vision, and philosophy.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Develop and implement comprehensive school safety and security plans in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Review and update regularly safety protocols, including emergency response procedures and crisis management plans.
- Conduct risk assessments to identify potential threats or vulnerabilities on school campuses.
- Coordinate and manage all drills for fire, lockdowns, active threats, and other emergencies.
- Serve as the direct contact for and management of any outsourced health and safety contracts.
- Serve as the primary point of contact during safety-related incidents or emergencies.
- Develop and maintain communication plans for emergencies, ensuring all staff are informed.
- Provide safety and security training for staff, students, and volunteers.
- Promote a culture of safety and awareness throughout the school community.
- Work closely with school administrators, staff, and local law enforcement agencies to enhance school safety measures.
- Act as a liaison with first responders, health agencies, and community partners.
- Oversee security systems, including cameras, alarms, and visitor management systems.
- Conduct regular inspections of school facilities to ensure safety standards are met.
- Maintain detailed records of incidents, drills, and safety evaluations, providing reports to administration and regulatory agencies as needed.
- Demonstrate a strong ability to work cross-functionally and build partnerships with ECSS Technology and Facilities teams to achieve safety objectives.
- Collaborate with the ECSS Technology and Facilities leadership to develop and maintain comprehensive safety and security plans for all campuses.
- Coordinate training and drills for staff and students in collaboration with facilities and building principals, faculty, and staff.
- Provide safety-related talks/workshops/trainings, for students, faculty, staff, and/or parents, as appropriate.
- Demonstrate presence at campus events as directed by the ECSS President.

Work Conditions:
- Required to work in campus settings, with frequent movement between buildings, and in a professional office.
- Required to work occasional evenings and weekends for trainings, meetings, or emergency responses.
- Required travel among school campuses, parishes, and sites outside of the Erie area necessitates the incumbent to have a vehicle and valid driver’s license.
- Required to manage moderate to high levels of stress.
- All Erie Catholic positions require on-campus attendance; remote work and flexible scheduling options are not offered.
