Job TITLE: Bus Driver

Reports to: Principal

Position status: PT and Nonexempt

Position Summary:

Under the direct supervision of the Principal, the individual in this position will transport students and/or adult chaperones to and from school and other sites within designated route(s) using good judgment and extreme caution. The driver will ensure the safety of passengers while in a school vehicle. The Bus Driver has all the background, experience and qualifications to provide bus transportation on a daily basis.  He/she is responsible for complying with policies and procedures, current federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations governing transporting students while meeting established bus schedules.

Required Qualifications:

  • High school or GED diploma
  • A minimum of two years’ successful and proven experience as a bus driver
  • Proper licensing to operate a school bus in Pennsylvania
  • Must possess a safe driving record and ability to obtain all necessary clearances

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • To transport students to and from school and other sites within designated route(s)
  • To ensure the safe operation of a school bus and the safety of passengers while meeting established bus schedules.
  • Transports students, teachers and chaperones on field trips to various locations; planning necessary route(s) and stops as needed
  • Establish and maintain proper student conduct / discipline of student passengers
  • Conduct safety and operational inspection of assigned vehicle daily; report needed mechanical repairs when necessary
  • Service buses with gas, diesel fuel, and oil; checks and when necessary fills tires and batteries
  • Perform periodical safety drills as required by law; completing necessary reports upon request
  • Maintains cleanliness of vehicle; wash bus as needed and within an established budget
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply basic first aid practices, procedures, and techniques
  • Knowledge of and proven record of abiding by the Pennsylvania Motor Vehicle Code and the Education Code as it applies to the safe operation of vehicles for transporting school children
  • Behave in a professional manner at all times
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Performance Factors/Job Competencies:

  • Must have physical requirements necessary to safely and effectively perform required duties, including visual, motor and reflexive skills to safely and effectively operate a school bus.
  • Must have verbal skills to communicate effectively with the students, families and staff.
  • Must be able to effectively enforce student discipline in an orderly and proper manner.
  • Must be able to assist in maintaining transportation and all pertinent records.
  • Must be able to prioritize and efficiently complete tasks with minimal supervision
  • Must demonstrate adherence to the highest moral standards at all times.

Work Environment:   This job operates primarily in a school bus.  Incumbent must be able to sit/drive for extended periods of time.
